Basel-Mulhouse Airport VIP Transfer — Three Countries, One Arrival

May 2026 · 7 min read · FFGR Strasbourg VIP Team

EuroAirport Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg is the only airport in the world that serves three countries from a single terminal complex — France, Switzerland, and Germany — with separate immigration and customs areas under one roof. For clients arriving from Geneva, London, Dubai, or New York, it is often the optimal entry point for Strasbourg, Alsace, the Black Forest, and northwestern Switzerland. Getting from the tarmac to your destination, across a tri-national regulatory boundary, is the FFGR Strasbourg speciality.

Understanding EuroAirport's Tri-National Structure

Basel-Mulhouse operates under a 1949 treaty between France and Switzerland. The airport is physically located on French soil but operates Swiss customs and immigration on one side and French customs on the other, with a German highway connection to the east. For VIP arrivals on private aviation, the choice of FBO — Swiss side or French side — determines which immigration authority the client clears through, and consequently which road network they depart from.

FFGR Strasbourg manages this complexity on behalf of the client. We brief the arrival team on the optimal landing protocol based on the client's passport, the vehicle's registered country, and the intended destination. A Strasbourg-bound principal typically clears French customs and departs via the A35; a Basel city centre principal uses Swiss customs and the A2.

VIP Terminal & FBO Services at BSL

The Swiss side of Basel-Mulhouse hosts the principal FBO operators: Jet Aviation (part of General Dynamics) and a smaller dedicated apron operator used by several European royal families. The French side hosts the main commercial terminal with its dedicated Club class lounge and the VIP salon accessible to first-class and business-jet passengers on Skyteam, oneworld, and Star Alliance. FFGR Strasbourg has established relationships with ground handlers on both sides.

Our vehicles position on the apron — airside — when clearance is granted, eliminating the terminal walk entirely. For commercial arrivals, we coordinate meet-and-greet through the arrivals hall, with our driver at the first exit point after baggage reclaim. Transfer time from Basel to central Strasbourg: 35 to 45 minutes by road.

Basel to Strasbourg: The 45-Minute Route

The A35 motorway connects Basel-Mulhouse to Strasbourg directly, crossing the French border at Saint-Louis and continuing north through Mulhouse, Colmar, and Sélestat. In normal conditions, central Basel to the Hotel Régent Contades or the Hilton Strasbourg is a 45-minute drive. On EP plenary opening days — typically Monday afternoons — allow an additional 20 minutes.

An alternative route via the D83 and the Alsace wine villages adds approximately 30 minutes but passes through Eguisheim, Colmar's Grande Rue, and Riquewihr. For clients arriving on leisure itineraries, this is our recommended approach: the airport transfer becomes the beginning of the Alsace experience.

Multi-Destination Transfers from BSL

EuroAirport's geographical position makes it the ideal hub for multi-destination regional ground transport. From the arrivals hall, a client can reach: Strasbourg (45 min), Colmar (25 min), Mulhouse (15 min), Basel city centre (20 min), Freiburg im Breisgau (30 min), Baden-Baden (75 min), and Berne (90 min). FFGR Strasbourg designs multi-stop itineraries across this map at any scale — a single transfer with a Colmar lunch stop, or a five-day Alsace-Rhine-Switzerland programme.

For corporate groups arriving on charter flights, we deploy multiple vehicles from Strasbourg, Colmar, and Basel simultaneously, coordinated by a single dispatch contact. The principal point of contact is always FFGR; the complexity is absorbed by our team.

Private Jet Arrivals: Handling & Customs

Private aviation clients at Basel-Mulhouse benefit from expedited customs and immigration through the dedicated general aviation facilities. On the French side, the douane office processes non-EU arrivals in the dedicated VIP lounge. On the Swiss side, the Jet Aviation FBO coordinates directly with the Swiss federal customs authority (BAZG). FFGR Strasbourg briefs both sets of handlers when coordinating a private jet arrival.

For clients requiring absolute speed — from wheels-down to motorway: under 20 minutes — we recommend the Swiss FBO, the Swiss customs channel (for Schengen-zone nationals), and northbound A35 departure. Our driver is on the apron; the car is running.

Booking Your Basel Airport Transfer

We require the flight number or tail number, estimated time of arrival (or block time for private jets), number of passengers, destination, and any special requirements (armored vehicle, close-protection coordination, child seat). For private jet arrivals, we additionally request the FBO name and the client's preferred customs channel.

For bookings within four hours of arrival, WhatsApp is the only reliable channel. For planned visits, contact us at least 48 hours in advance. We confirm within one hour.
