Colmar Private Chauffeur — The Most Photographed Town in France

May 2026 · 7 min read · FFGR Strasbourg VIP Team

Colmar receives more visitors per capita than almost any other city in France — and unlike Paris or Lyon, it has not yet built the infrastructure to process them at scale. The streets of La Petite Venise, the Rue des Marchands, and the Krutenau quarter are genuinely narrow, genuinely old, and genuinely beautiful. They are also, on any given summer afternoon or Christmas market evening, genuinely congested. The right arrival strategy is everything.

Why Colmar Rewards Private Chauffeur Travel

Colmar's historic centre is classified as a Zone à Faible Émissions (ZFE) and a pedestrian-priority area. Private vehicles — including most rental cars — face restricted access during peak hours. Only NCC operators with the correct municipal authorisations can drop passengers directly at the Grand Hôtel Bristol, the Hostellerie Le Maréchal, or the Maison des Têtes. The alternative — parking 15 minutes from the centre on foot — defeats the purpose of arriving in a luxury vehicle.

Beyond access, Colmar's footprint is compact enough to walk, but the surrounding region is not. Day excursions from Colmar — to Eguisheim, Kaysersberg, the Hartmannswillerkopf memorial, or the Guebwiller wine valley — require a car. FFGR Strasbourg provides Colmar-based disposals so that clients can walk the Petite Venise in the morning and be at a Grand Cru estate by afternoon.

Colmar as a Base for Southern Alsace

Colmar sits at the geographical heart of the Alsace Wine Route, equidistant between Strasbourg (70 km north) and Basel (65 km south). This makes it the optimal base for exploring the most celebrated wine villages: Eguisheim (rated one of the most beautiful villages in France) is 6 km to the south; Kaysersberg (birthplace of Albert Schweitzer, home to the Domaine Weinbach) is 11 km to the northwest; Riquewihr and Ribeauvillé are 15 km to the northeast.

FFGR Strasbourg offers Colmar-based chauffeur programmes that can be booked independently of any Strasbourg transfer. Clients staying at the Grand Hôtel Bristol or at the Hostellerie Le Maréchal can request a vehicle from their concierge, who contacts us directly.

The Unterlinden Museum & Cultural Visits

Colmar's Unterlinden Museum houses the Isenheim Altarpiece — Matthias Grünewald's 16th-century polyptych, widely considered one of the most powerful works in the history of Western painting. The museum also holds a remarkable collection of Upper Rhenish and Flemish paintings. Private guided visits, outside standard opening hours, can be arranged through FFGR Strasbourg's concierge for groups with appropriate credentials.

Beyond the Unterlinden, Colmar's museum of natural history, the Toy Museum (Musée du Jouet), and the Bartholdi Museum — dedicated to the sculptor of the Statue of Liberty, who was born in Colmar — offer quieter alternatives. Our drivers are briefed on all opening times and parking protocols.

Colmar During Christmas Market Season

Colmar's Christmas market runs across five different themed villages from late November to 31 December. The demand for private transport during this period — particularly for groups staying in Strasbourg who wish to visit Colmar and the surrounding village markets in a single day — is extraordinary. FFGR Strasbourg operates a dedicated Christmas season schedule, with vehicles reserved six weeks in advance for the peak Advent weekends.

Our full-day Christmas market circuit covers Strasbourg's market (the largest), Colmar's five villages, and one or two village markets (Kaysersberg or Ribeauvillé) in between, with a tarte flambée lunch at a local restaurant and winery visits to taste the vin chaud at source. Reservations recommended by October.

Colmar to Basel, Mulhouse & Freiburg

Colmar's position at the centre of the Upper Rhine triangle means that Basel (65 km), Mulhouse (25 km), and Freiburg im Breisgau (45 km) are all within day-trip range. FFGR Strasbourg operates cross-border transfers from Colmar across all three destinations, with the same vehicle-and-driver standard as any Strasbourg-based service.

For clients whose programme extends from Colmar into Switzerland — a Basel meeting followed by a Zurich hotel stay, for instance — we provide continuation transfers with no requirement to change operator or rebook. One brief, one driver, one vehicle.

Booking Colmar Chauffeur Services

Colmar transfers can be booked as a standalone service or as an extension of a Strasbourg programme. Hotel concierges at the Grand Hôtel Bristol, Hostellerie Le Maréchal, and Maison des Têtes have our direct contact. Alternatively, use our WhatsApp number or contact form.

For Christmas market visits and wine route tours, we recommend booking at least two weeks in advance during the October–December period. For all other requests, 48 hours is sufficient for a confirmed vehicle and driver.
